cheap eats, Zagat food Rating, google

Do you want to have your cake and eat it too?  Sure!  I’m always on the look out for good quality food at the lowest possible price.  Websites like Yelp and Urbanspoon are great resources to find cheap eats.  However, my new favorite is Zagat.

For those of you who haven’t heard of Zagat, it is a restaurant rating service.  Zagat uses a 30 point scale to rate restaurants (and other food establishments) on factors like Food, Decor, Service and Cost.  Late last year, Google bought Zagat.  Prior to Google’s acquisition you had to pay for Zagat’s ratings.  Google has made it FREE!!

Here is a video (and transcript) of how to use Zagat to, among other things, find good quality cheap eats in less than 5 minutes.

Today I’m going to show you how to find good quality cheap eats in less than 5 minutes using Zagat.

Go to  Sign in with your Google plus account.  If you don’t have a Google plus account, you can register here for free.

After you sign in, in the where box, type in your zip code or address, or pick your city.  I’m going to select Sacramento, CA.  Then click on Advanced search and drag the Food slider to 21.  21 means that the restaurant’s food is ‘very good to exceptional’ – If you prefer your food to be ‘Extraordinary to perfection’, than drag the slider to 26.  Click on Search.

Go to this dropdown menu and check how far you are willing to drive.  I’m going to check 5 miles.  Then go to the sort by drop down menu and select Cost: low to high.

The results displayed in the ascending order of price.  My best and cheapest bet in Sacramento is Chando’s Tacos.  Their food rating is 27 and the cost for dinner with one drink for one person is $9.

You can filter these results by things like cuisines, neighborhoods and meals served.  You can view the results on a map or a chart and if you are a data junkie,  click on stats and it will give you a table of all the metrics for the restaurants.

If you prefer to do this on your smartphone, Zagat has apps for Android phones and tablets. They had apps for iphones and ipads, buy Google chose to discontinue these.  So if you are an iphone or an ipad user, your best bet is to use this service on the phone’s browser.

Thank you for watching.
